As the second-generation PLC product of the S7-200 SMART series, the S7-200 SMART G2 is expected to be officially launched between March and April 2026 and is currently in the pre-sale phase. This product emphasizes localized adaptation, designed specifically for the Chinese market. Its price is expected to be on par with or slightly lower than the current model, aiming to cover small to medium-sized automation projects with up to 500 I/O points and directly compete with domestic PLCs.
In terms of hardware, it features a blade-type modular design, with a volume 30% smaller than its predecessor. It supports plug-in terminals for simplified on-site wiring. It can expand to a maximum of 16 I/O modules (including CPU and signal boards), representing a 60% increase in I/O capacity compared to the previous generation. Functionally, motion control is significantly enhanced, supporting 5-axis PTO pulse output (100kHz) and adding electronic cam, gear synchronization, and Trace real-time monitoring functions. It is compatible with servo drive systems, enabling complex trajectory control such as logistics sorting. Communication performance is upgraded, featuring dual Ethernet ports as standard, supporting the PROFINET protocol for 50% more efficient networking. The processor is also upgraded, resulting in 30% faster logic instruction execution and expanded storage space.
On the software side, it requires the STEP 7-Micro/WIN SMART V3.1 programming software, supporting LAD, FBD, and STL languages, as well as a program migration tool. New features include security permission management (4-level password protection) and UDF (User-Defined Function) functionality, enhancing operational safety and convenience.
2. Distributed I/O Upgrade: ET 200PA SMART Iterated to ET 200PA SMART+
In February 2026, Siemens announced the upgrade of the ET 200PA SMART to the ET 200PA SMART+. As a successor, this product is based on the mature and stable hardware of the ET 200SP HA. It is designed in Germany, manufactured in Chinese factories, and represents a cost-effective, localized product tailored for Chinese customers. It is designed to perfectly meet the diverse requirements of current process industries and future digital factories.
The ET 200PA SMART+ adds several core functions, including a corrosion-resistant coating, support for online configuration changes, hot-swapping, I/O redundancy, and R1 (redundant) configuration, making it suitable for complex industrial environments. Siemens has also simultaneously released detailed upgrade plans covering three models: one-step upgrade, two-step implementation, and batch replacement. These plans facilitate users in smoothly completing the upgrade from the old to the new product, minimizing upgrade costs and risks.
